'In The Garden' June

May 26th to June 2nd was Hardy Geranium Week and the gardens and nursery were in full bloom with numerous varieties of these versatile and classically beautiful plants, including the .Geranium 'Rozanne' overall winner of the RHS 'Plant of the Centenary' at the Chelsea Flower Show.

We popped down to the Kilver gardens for a chat with head gardener, Chris Bath, on how to grow and maintain the perfect geranium. With his 34 years of experience in the Kilver gardens he is the man to talk to and here are his top tips:

  • Geraniums are a great low maintenance plant, which will flower pretty much throughout the summer, right from May till September.
  • Clear away old foliage in the winter and they will come back year after year
  • They like to be moist but not a huge amount of water is needed and they can tolerate periods of dryness.
  • A great border plant basically, that can be left to its own devises.
Each month we will be down in the garden with Chris, gleaning as much knowledge from him as possible, so let us know if you have any issues with your top soil or are unsure when and where to plant your favourite bulbs and we will do our best to answer as many questions as possible.
